Marlec, established in 1978 in Rutland, the smallest county in the UK, was founded by John Fawkes, who later earned the Wind Energy Pioneer award from the British Wind Energy Association. As a retired engineer and successful businessman, he was tasked with finding ways to maintain battery charge on remote farms for electric fence units disconnected from the grid. His invention, the Rutland Windcharger, became the solution—a straightforward, dependable, silent, and effective wind-powered battery charger
