The battery comes packaged in a carton box with a user manual and bolts/washers for terminals.
What is a Gel battery?
A gel battery is a type of Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) battery filled with special gel-type electrolyte. Gel batteries are non-spillable, completely sealed and maintenance free – one of the safest batteries you can find. They have a much longer service life compared to standard wet-cell batteries due to less degradation and corrosion inside the battery. Gel batteries hold charge very well and have a much lower self-discharge rate.
Other important benefits of gel batteries include:
- Better recovery from deep discharge
- Wider working temperature range (gel batteries work well even in cold temperatures as low as -10C)
- Their position doesn’t have to be upright all the time
- These batteries have better resistance to shock and vibration
Specifications:
- Nominal voltage: 12V
- Nominal capacity: 200Ah (10h rate) / 205Ah (20h rate)

How is a Gel Battery Made?
A Gel battery, also known as a gel cell or gel electrolyte battery, is a type of lead-acid battery that uses a gelified electrolyte instead of a liquid one. Gel batteries are commonly used in applications where maintenance-free operation, vibration resistance, and deep cycle capability are required, such as in race cars, rally cars, solar energy storage systems, backup power supplies, and in some recreational vehicles.
Here’s a simplified overview of how a gel battery is made:
- Battery Case: The outer casing of the battery is typically made of durable plastic. It provides protection and contains all the internal components.
- Lead Plates: Inside the battery case, there are a number of lead plates, which are typically made of lead or lead alloy. These plates are coated with lead dioxide (PbO2) and sponge lead (Pb), and they serve as the positive and negative electrodes, respectively.
- Separator: Thin insulating separators are placed between the positive and negative plates to prevent short circuits. If these fail or split the battery dies.
- Gel Electrolyte: The electrolyte in a gel battery is a thickened sulfuric acid solution. This electrolyte is immobilized by adding a gelling agent, usually fumed silica, which turns the liquid electrolyte into a gel-like substance. This gel electrolyte fills the space between the plates and separators, immobilizing the electrolyte and preventing spills even if the battery case is damaged or tipped over. This is where the battery gets its name, Gel Battery
- Sealing: Once the gel electrolyte is added, the battery is sealed to prevent leakage. Sealing ensures that the gel electrolyte remains in place and maintains its gel-like consistency throughout the battery’s lifespan. A small valve can be fitted but this is very small.
- Terminal Connections: The positive and negative terminals are attached to the respective plates. These terminals allow for the connection of external circuits or devices to the battery. These are on the outside of the battery. Red = Positive and Black = Negative
- Formation: After assembly, the battery undergoes a formation process, which involves initial charging and discharging cycles. This process activates the chemical reactions within the battery and ensures optimal performance.
Gel batteries have transformed energy storage with their outstanding reliability and maintenance-free design. The intricate manufacturing process of gel batteries includes several complex stages, from preparing the battery plates to the final sealing and quality control. Comprehending this process helps us recognize the engineering expertise and meticulousness inherent in these advanced cells.
