10amp Charge Controllers – PWM and MPPT

10 good uses for a 10A charge controller

  1. Caravan and motorhome lighting
A small solar panel can keep a leisure battery topped up for LED lights and other low-power equipment.
  2. Garden shed lighting
Use a small solar panel and battery to provide automatic or switched lighting without running mains cables to the shed.
  3. Small garden offices
A 10A controller can work well with a modest solar setup powering LED lighting, USB charging and other low-power devices.
  4. Security cameras
Ideal for small off-grid CCTV installations where a solar panel charges a battery that powers a camera day and night.
  5. Electric fence systems
Small agricultural and garden electric fence systems can use solar charging to maintain their battery without a mains supply.
  6. Remote lighting
Useful for lighting gates, pathways, outbuildings, signs, workshops and other areas where mains electricity isn’t readily available.
  7. Boat and marine applications
A small solar panel can maintain a leisure or auxiliary battery on a boat, particularly when it is stored or not regularly used.
  8. Camping and outdoor activities
A portable solar panel and battery can provide power for phones, USB devices, LED lights and other small camping equipment.
  9. Remote monitoring equipment
Small weather stations, sensors, GPS equipment and monitoring systems can use a solar panel and battery combination to operate away from the mains.
  10. Keeping a battery maintained
One of the simplest uses is connecting a small solar panel to a battery that needs to remain charged, such as a leisure battery, workshop battery or backup battery.

A simple example

A 10A controller could be used with something like:

100W solar panel → 10A charge controller → 12V battery → LED lights/USB devices

At 12V, a 10A controller can theoretically handle around 120W of solar input, although the actual allowable panel size depends on the controller’s specifications, particularly its maximum PV voltage and whether it is PWM or MPPT.

When you are building a small system the 10amp Charge Controller is a good option for you. Most small systems will work very well with the PWM but you should also look at the MPPT.

When selecting a 10a Charge Controller, always consider a 20a or 30a as in the future you may want to build a bigger system. Did you know? A Solar Charge Controller also stops reverse current at night Because at night without a Charge Controller is is possible dc current will flow back to the Solar Panel and effectively attempt to charge the Solar Panel with dc voltage.
